It was said that they were shapeshifters, able to take on human form by placing reeds, a broad leaf, or a skull over its head, very much like a mask. They also were known to have powers over illusion that were so strong, it would be impossible to tell whether it was real or fake.

And so Reynard lives on in their hearts and minds. They see him as their savior and champion, even if that may have been the furthest from the truth. I wouldn't be surprised if it came to light that he set it up that way for just that purpose. I would guess their motivation would be a mix of revenge and to continue what Reynard supposedly started?
