[For a long moment Elrond just stares at the locket without speaking. Arwen? No. Almost, but not quite right to be his beloved daughter. Which means, this has to be Lúтнїєп.]

Well met. I am Elrond of Imladris, and I offer my skills, when I return to Caer Glaem in a few weeks. Though healing is a great gift in this time of war.

[Very nearly, but not entirely - Arwen is a shadow of Lúthien, after all. Her mouth sets as she looks at the other elf, expression hardening minutely. He's part of the problem, then.]

There is little enough a healer may do but act passively, which would not seem to always be the best course in such a time as this.

[Disapproval. She knows. Elrond holds his calm, however.]

Which is why I offer myself to further what skills you feel you lack, if you would permit it.

When I see you then, perhaps.

[She feels... tired, suddenly.]

And when are you from, Master Elrond? I had not heard of you, but that hardly seems unusual, in this place.

[He inclines his head a little, accepting. And not entirely surprised. Just as little surprised as she seems over not knowing his name.]

Indeed. It was the year 2941 of the Third Age.

[She sighs in slight frustration at that.]

Everyone, it seems, is from far beyond my own time.

[To a lesser degree, he understands her frustration. From both sides.]

That does seem a commonality here. What year was it for you?

[So he has an idea of what she knows and what she does not.]

It's been eighty two years since the first rising of the sun.

[It's a little weird to try thinking of things in ages.]

[ Well, the thought of teaching has certainly perked someone up. ]

What kind of magic did you want to learn?

[Healing? So she is a mage?]

What else would you wish to learn? Have you other spells that you use?

I can teach you, huh? But I don't know whatcha wanna learn.

I wanna learn how to heal. I'll trade you, huh? Huh?

My skills are only that of mortal men, though I have helped the injured twice now. I can only use gauze and herbs, but I would take any help offered. Idle hands as they say. [She knows this grievance well.]

[She blinks a little in some confusion at that. Magic? Uh.]

It need not be... magic. [Her voice is slightly uncertain at the term, she's a little fuzzy still on quite what people mean by it. Besides, Melian's Arts are much more obviously 'magical' than anything Lúthien can do, who after all is only talented more or less as any elf is. In different areas than some, perhaps, but Melian is her mother.]

I was hoping for something that might be used slightly more... proactively than simply the knowledge to heal.

I would wish to learn something beyond healing; I'm tired of having little that I can do at need other than wait. It's... not a spell, exactly? My Mother taught me. There are Songs of Enchantment that I know....

[Do those count as spells? She's not really sure.]

[She smiles a little at that.]

Some have more of a gift for it than others, but I can try, though I am afraid I have never taught anyone before and do not know what kind of teacher I would be.

I'm... tired of feeling like there's nothing I can do. I don't want to be trapped here.

I would be happy to help. I am skilled, I am told, though I had few enough opportunities to test those skills at home.

What do they say of idle hands?

Idle hands are the devil's playthings. [She's still learning the variance in religions here.]

I am of mind that we need a central location. It seems if this war is true, and we must take part, I think a safe spot would be wise.

[She... doesn't quite get the reference but ooookay then. This is what happens when the 'devil' has an actual physical presence in the world, a little north of your home. Or okay kind of a lot north, but not nearly as far as it might be.]

[ She does look sheepish and she bows her head a little before she offers a softer smile. She doesn't want to delve too much, but she does want to help and educate - which is important, really, in her opinion. ]

What sort of thing were you hoping to learn? Maybe I could help.

Yeah, yeah--so you gotta make the best of it. Gotta do what you can, huh? Like at least tryin' to teach. I learn quickly, it ain't matter if you're crummy at it, madame!

True enough, but why should that disqualify it?

A desire that I understand more and more with each passing day, my lady.

A healer has her place, and the work is important enough, but her work is limited. Besides, I don't want to have to rely on others.

I've never been entirely sure what magic is, I'm afraid.

I'm not sure. Anything that might be helpful. I don't want to be helpless.

Well, for me, magic is... A part of me. I was born with it and I went to school to learn how to use and control it - and it let's me do almost anything, within reason, of course.

[ Her smile brightens, more friendly now. ]

I don't know how to do anything particularly... Weapon-based, I'm afraid. I haven't quite learned yet.

Yes, but what is it?

[She just has what she can do, that's all! It's perfectly natural. Magic, by contrast, is weird.]

Nor have I - there wasn't ever need at home, and I do not imagine my father would have allowed me.

Are there others here that you can rely upon?

Well, the way it's taught in my world... Magic is a force that can alter the fabric of reality at fundamental levels - conjuration, illusions, transfiguring, that sort of thing. We also learn to brew Potions and defend ourselves.

[ She nods her head, looking a little thoughtful. ]

I never needed physical protection, but it seems sensible in this situation, doesn't it? I think there was someone who said they'd be happy to teach us some self-defence, if you'd like that?

But isn't changing the way that things are a thing that anyone can do?

[She shakes her head a little.]

Forgive me, the definition has just always puzzled me. The dwarves have called many things magic, and many of them are very different.

And yes. I'd prefer not to fight, unless I need to, but I would like to know that I could in that need.

There is one here who is like a sister to me, and her family. I can rely on... most of them, I think, and certainly her.

Is healing part of what you can do, then? I shall try my best but without that start I don't know how much I can teach, beyond the basics.

Not necessarily. You can alter things, using one thing and another, or change them using a tool - like bending metal, I suppose. But magic is... It's a whole other level. It's incredibly hard to explain because it's always just been a part of me.

[ She smiles softly, a little tender - she understands the confusion. When she was first told she was a witch, well... ]

I think it's something that's different for everyone. There might be a solid idea of it in each world, but it means something to each person on a level no one else could understand, I suppose.

[ And, as for the fighting? Hermione can appreciate that. ]

Their name was Sir Integra Hellsing. I'm a little too used to fighting, but if something happened to my magic I'd be defenceless.

[She sighs a little.]

My mother has been accused of magic, as has my father, as have I, but what we do is all different. The Enemy in the North has been as well, and what he does is as different from the elves or the valar or the maiar as sunlight is from shadow.

[Oh Hermione if only you knew.]

Hm, maybe I shall ask them, then, if you know where I may find them.

Magic means something different to everyone, then? Maybe that's worth asking about, seeing what magic means to all of us. It might lead to some interesting results.

[ She nods her head, looking quite pleased with herself. ]

She made a post on the lockets a little while ago, you could try that? And if not sometimes they let us send private messages to people, so that could work too.

Magic as a nonsense word, because people who speak it make no difference. It is like the differences between flowers and stars, and I don't know what else they would call the same.

Mmm, I shall look for it, then!

I too know such a girl. Perhaps they can be a source of your strength?

If does not disqualify it. Rather such a place to care for wounded returning would need a central location within the castle itself.
