1st Circuit - Text for Both Courts, Video-locked for Unseelie

[There's probably a better way to do this, but at least he can put out feelers and see what he's working with. Since the decimation of Caer Scima Hiro's been a little more than bitter toward the Seelie and while he doesn't want to have anything to do with any of them, he realizes that as a scientist he needs to gather as much information as possible.]

It's been a long month, hasn't it? I'm not used to any of this. Monsters? Destroying people's castles? It's weird. I was getting ready for class one day and the next I came here and then the fighting started. I think I'm going to fall really, really behind in my homework. Makes me wonder…what do you miss most about home? I can't be the only one who really misses advanced tech (computers, video games, even the old stuff like VCRs would be okay at this point.) And I know, I know, the Station exists but it's not the same. So, what about you guys?

[If he can figure out what people value? Maybe they can use that to their advantage, too.]

[Unseelie Locked]

[Now comes the hard part. With that out of the way the video function of the locket clicks on and it's obvious that the locket's hanging from something in front of Hiro. He's in a room at the Station, ever-recognizable blue hoodie hanging loosely on his frame but the sleeves pushed up to his elbows. More importantly than that? He looks a little nervous.]

…hi. My name is Hiro Hamada. I don't know most of you, but I hope you're listening anyway.

[He pauses and looks to the side, evidently looking at someone else who's in the room with him. Deep breath, Hiro.]

It's not a secret that we lost this battle pretty bad. That's a fact, but I think there's something we can do about it to help recover. I know there are other people that don't know how to really fight, or there are people who can only fight with weapons. What if we could do something more than that?

[Give him a second and he's holding up his hand. It looks as though he might completely freeze up but after a short moment a small fireball appears in the palm of his hand. He wants to put it out immediately, but he pauses long enough to at least look at the locket again.]

I couldn't do this when I first got here. [And the fireball vanishes.] Think about how much stronger we'd be as a court if everybody could wield a couple of spells. Even if it's not something you want to use for offense even picking up a few for defense is better than nothing. I know there're a lot of magic users here but…well, Lemina and I have been working on something pretty cool.

[He's going to lean forward and pick up what looks like a piece of paper with a class list and a list of elemental spells written on it to show the camera.]

The Guild's designed to not only teach people how to unlock their own magic ability but hone it and build up to becoming a better magician. We have a few ideas how to use it to help our side of this war. We're going to start classes soon for anybody who's even kinda curious. [A pause.] Look, I didn't even really believe in magic before I got here and knowing the little bit I learned saved me back there. It'd be really cool if you guys considered it and you can always ask Lemina or me if you have questions.

[Actually…he looks off screen toward where Lemina's sitting.] Maybe we should do that now?

[ooc: This is actually going to be open to both Seelie and Unseelie because of the mage university being started by Tzilan just outside of Redgate. Lemina's been putting up flyers around the Station and Hiro just doesn't realize it and has a very strong bias against the Seelie. As an aside, Lemina will also be teaching classes at said-university on her own, but will be keeping the Guild as something separate. edit: also Lemina might pop into some threads as well!]

Maybe not to the person doing the killing, but to the people that would miss the dead? I don't know how you'd explain something like that.

[Somehow Thrall always manages to say things Hiro doesn't expect and so he falls quiet, staring at the camera again. Okay. So it's not just him. He's not going to explain why there's a softer smile as he nods.]

I kinda thought we already were, but if you really wanna make it official...[He's mostly just teasing at least.] I don't have any friends my age back home and I don't have a lot my age here, either. We should all stick together anyway, right?

[He makes note of that "not really" statement but he's not gonna ask just yet. That can wait.]

Mostly just that everybody has the ability to learn and that the magic we're using doesn't require activating your shards. Kinda makes me wonder what we can do when they are turned on. This is just raw magic.

Hey, I'd believe it. You don't have to tell me twice. [That is to say that Howard doesn't have to justify himself. It's okay. Hiro's already decided that no matter what he's perfectly acceptable for now.]

Yeah, but not for long. Just long enough to grab some stuff and leave. Kinda glad I left before the fire hit though. [Just because he's a fire user now doesn't mean he's comfortable around it. That's a good question though and there's a thoughtful little hum to go with it.] Where would we even find new books though? I think they can probably magic a lot of it back together but there's always room for more in the collection. Just another thing to add to the monarchs' plates. How bad are the anti-shardbearer movements around the world anyway? Do we know?

[That gets a small laugh from him. Blowing up isn't good by any stretch of the imagination, but that is the life of a scientist. Trying and failing.] Lemina tricked me into it. [A look off-camera says he's looking at the girl in question, shooting her a devious grin.] She told me she could teach me and made it sound really, really cool and so I asked her to teach me. Can't hurt to learn everything I can, right?

Simply put, there's power that a Player can tap into. I think the best example would be the Player Pin, which is not only indicative of your status as a Player in the Game, but will allow you to scan the thoughts of the people around you within a certain radius. Any Player can use that pin. Another example that's more to do with defending yourself is that there are pins that will allow someone to use pyrokinesis in battle or psychokinesis.

The way you talk about her, she must be well loved. She just has her hands full.

(WELL THEN. Howard is just going to go ahead and salute him a little for that.

He is just going to nod sagely. He didn't blame anyone who left early. He had just held on too long, thankfully some of the imps had stayed with him. He assumed they were the ones who got him out, too, even if he wasn't sure.) I'm just glad I haven't heard of any casualties from it. (And that he wasn't one, too. He nods again.) Around? Raid the Seelie library? I was talking to someone about a library of old, but apparently that's been completely obliterated. Though I'd be interesting to see if there were traces of them somewhere. Have you heard of The Drabkeeper? (He wrinkles his nose.) I don't, but we're both relatively new here so we should talk to some of those who've been around.

Not at all. I am definitely interested, after all. I want to learn as much as I can, too.

Free telepathy. Cool. Does that mean that other people can read the Players thoughts, too? And that's gotta mean there're pins that can be used to outright attack players huh. You don't know how they're made, do you? [Big ideas, this one.]

She is. [He loves his aunt a lot okay. She's kinda all he has left as far as family goes.] Aunt Cass never had her own kids and she probably wasn't expecting to have any so she's been figuring it out just as much as we have. I've been living with her since I was three.

[Thrall is obviously surprised. He feels bad about being surprised, but it's plain on his face.] You-- really? [Aaaaas usual, Hiro pulls the rug out from under him. It's a great thing. Thrall has known some wonderful humans in his life.]

That is-- yes. We should.

[He lets out a breath.]

Spirits, I thought you would say no. I am an orc, after all.

[He's really good at that. It hasn't even occurred to him that, perhaps, some people might think it's strange for a teenage boy to befriend an orc but he's mostly stuck on the thought of "why not?"

It's a locked conversation though, and knowing that helps him feel a little more secure with his next line of thought.]

…my best friend back home wasn't exactly human either. I mean he definitely wasn't human, but he was kinda like you. Different. Still learning about me and how the world worked, but…he was amazing.

[There's a pull at his mouth, expression dipping into a frown before he shakes it off again. He can think about Baymax later. Stay on point, Hiro.] Anyway, just because you're an orc doesn't mean you can't be a good friend.

No, the Player Pins block scanning attempts, too. You can't scan Reapers, either. They have a natural immunity to mind reading. I know that Player Pins are made by the Composer, but the other pins I think are made by my artist friend. He's a sort of guardian for the game, making sure Reapers are playing within the rules, as long as he can catch them.

Regardless, she's family. She sounds like the type who wouldn't regret the decision to take you in.

[Joshua also makes a mental note that if he comes across a Cass Hamada, he's totally going to meet her.]

Shadier. I think they might be some of the people the merchants need protection from, sometimes. [ A shrug...she clearly doesn't mind. ]

How long would it take to learn a simple spell? A fire one? [ She will CONTACT HIM LATER THEN... ]

I didn't know anyone personally who was killed in action. I'm just hoping it stays that way the next time the fighting starts. [Hmm. That's a good point, and he may or may not be thinking of how to break into the Caer Glaem library and steal some books. Sounds like a fun challenge.] I have absolutely no idea who or what that is. The Drabkeeper, I mean. I should start asking around about the anti-shardbearer sentiments though…see how careful we have to be in the next couple of months. I don't like it, but we're seriously outnumbered here.

I had a feeling. [Kindred spirit, this one.] Even if you don't want to work with the class Lemina or I could probably provide you with a one on one lesson to get started.

If there was anyone left to miss our patron, they would only have time to miss him for a week.

Pretty useful pins then. Too bad nobody else can make them, I bet you could do some pretty sweet upgrades on them. Yeah...sometimes we stress her out a lot but I kinda hope she wouldn't regret that sort of decision.

[And now he really misses Aunt Cass. Thanks Josh.]

From what I've heard she doesn't even know I'm gone.

Remind me to never, ever run into them. Ever. [That's not even possible so far and he knows it but it should still be said.]

A spell like this? Depends if you already have magic abilities or not. Lemina kinda helped me cheat so I learned a lot faster but I can still tap into my raw magic. [Apparently. He just figured that out earlier today.] If you practice probably not that long? You'd have to ask Lemina about anything stronger than this.

I learned this art easily enough. [ She gestures to her...entire self. Then her eyes. Lets the Tenpenka drop just enough that her eyes shift, more cat-yellow and heavy-lidded than before. It's a bother to change like that, halfway slipping, so she lets it go back after. ] I do not know if that counts as "magic" or not.

[ It probably does. Bullshit ninja magic. ]

I just want to learn to start a fire. [ ......she's offered to kill people so many times maybe she should specify ] For traveling. I'll ask her about it if that's not something you can teach.

I guess you could say that. [It raises a new interesting question though.] What would you qualify as super super smart anyway?

[It's clear that he's a little startled by the sudden shift but he doesn't verbally say so. Instead he just watches her shift and makes note to ask her more about it later because Shijima you don't just do stuff like that without warning.] I think it counts more like a superpower but that's sorta like magic. You might have an easier time than some of the others here who're starting from scratch.

[...that's a good thing to specify, yes.] That I can probably teach. You just need to know how to create a flame big enough to light a bunch of sticks on fire, that's not hard.

I have time to learn, anyway.

[ CENTURIES...presumably, unless she ever succeeds in the "getting herself killed" portion of her life goals. Which seems unlikely... ]

I'd like to learn as soon as you can teach me, then. [ It will be Useful and therefore it's worthwhile... ]

Y'know, it's probably better that you're here instead of home because your world sounds like a giant mess. [Which sucks.]

Since it doesn't look like we're going anywhere anytime soon? I think you're right.

[Do you see this bright grin? Do you? This is the face of a kid who's very pleased to hear that.] Sweet. You can come to our first meeting whenever that is...ooor I can teach you myself. That's up to you.

[ Well, it seems like a practical skill to learn...!!! Also, she's curious. ]

It'll be faster if you teach me, if you don't know when the first meeting will be. So let's do that. [ Though she will agree to go to the meeting-thing as well, since it seems to be important to him for some reason??? Whatever. ]

Perhaps if he ever bothers to show up, I'll point you in his direction.

[...Poor Mr. H.]

I've heard the same thing, and I'm willing to bet quite a bit that it's one of the few truths we've gotten.

[Considering he hasn't outright vanished from existence by this point, he thinks there's actual truth in that statement. Not to mention, it's the only reason he agreed to coming to the Drabwurld.]

We're hoping it'll be soon. [But given how they're mostly just working with as little resources as they have, it might take a little longer. But he has to put on the brave face for Lemina and keep encouraging her to move forward. He can explain that to Shijima later.]

But okay. We'll get started right away.
