As for the question of chemistry - it is a cousin of alchemy, actually. Grew out of alchemy, replacing the magic aspect with natural science. I cant say I'm familiar with the institutions you've mentioned, but the long and short of it is that it focuses on the changes of substances, and how they interact with each other.
