[ The locket opens on just Hermione's face; behind her there is nothing but a blank wall, at least until she turns. Then there's a small bookshelf, a series of vials and a cauldron before she sits down and refocuses the camera on her and nothing else. It takes her a moment to speak but she does - after taking a long, deep breath. ]

For anyone that doesn't know me, my name is Hermione Granger. We're about to enter a war and I don't think it's right that any of us enter entirely unprepared - there's only so much we can do, but I intend to do whatever I can to make sure that everyone is ready and as capable as they can be.

[ Another deep breath and she turns, so that both her cauldrons are in sight. ]

I've been brewing potions for the last few days, as much as I can and as quickly as I can. I have things for cuts, scrapes, wounds, for loss of blood and for burns, anti-paralysis... I think you get the idea. I've got a lot of stock and I'm ready to give it to anyone who thinks they might need it before they go and fight. If you need it after then you know my name and how to contact me, right?

[ She looks troubled, still; war isn't something she is entirely comfortable with, even now, even with how familiar she is with it. ]

Just let me know if you want or need something and I can pop over and deliver it. And if you have, um, friends that might need it but can't read this? Let me know. I'm an equal opportunist potioneer, I promise. Thank you for your time.

[ And, added a little later, if the change in the shadows of the room are any indication -- ]

You don't have to pay me for them, but if you can find ingredients or donate something that would be nice. Just so I can keep this going.

You know what? I'm going to make a list of all these things and start a plan of action. Then we can get together, maybe, and start this process off? It's something important that we definitely need to consider making a legitimate thing. I know the Courts have their own healing wings, but...

[ She wrinkles her nose, shaking her head. ]

It's not the same as being neutral. Of sharing our knowledge with each other.

Definitely! If you think they wouldn't mind helping then it's something we can look into. I'll do my own research too and maybe we can get together and talk about it? That's how we start.

[ Hermione knows all about secret groups and meetings and so on. Thank you, Dumbledore's Army.

Her question, though, does make Hermione's expression waver. ]

There was an evil wizard trying to take over our world. My best friends and I had to stop him.

I see. So all the knowledge of past generations is just - given to you through these Crests? That's an incredible way to learn but it does take out some of the fun. I loved reading and learning about magic in school - being given it seems a little bit like a waste, to be honest.

[ But that's how magic works in other worlds. It's fascinating, and she supposes not everyone has access to things like Hogwarts or Durmstrang. She has to understand that not everyone has the same opportunities as she did; magic school is a unique thing. ]

I think it's something to look into, at least. Knowledge is something we need to survive and understand what we're doing here.

Hm, well, I wouldn't say it's like that? It's more like... you still have to put in a great deal of study to be able to effectively use the knowledge you're given, and as it's part of an inheritance you're generally going to spend several years learning how to use magic without it.

And anyway, no crest has the complete encyclopedia of magic written into it, so there's always still plenty to learn. The progression is usually more about educating yourself before you begin university-style education at Clock Tower, so while the academic setting for it comes later it's not actually absent.

[...let's not talk about the fact that Magic College politics are hell. Well, he doesn't care, anyway. Magic College is great.]

Exactly. Of course, there are several people dedicated to that sort of thing already, aren't there...?

I see. So it's a little more like being given, say, a mathmatical formula and not being given the information you need to actively solve it? You have the information but no active means of understanding how to use it.

[ That seems to make a little more sense, at least. ]

That does sound better than just shoving information at descendants and hoping they use it properly - or even understand it. The Clock Tower must be a little like Hogwarts, then - that's where witches and wizards in my world go to learn how to use and control their magic.

[ Which has it's own set of problems, of course. ]

I think so. It wouldn't surprise me if there were more we didn't know about, too.

Evil wizard? [ That's--wow. ] I mean, yes, I'd love to talk about it--Ryan, do you know him? He's from my world, too, he's been helping me--but evil wizard?

Is everyone magical in your world, or are there people... You know. [ Like me. ]

Then I'll make sure I ask him, too - maybe you could let him know so I don't surprise him out of nowhere?

[ But. Gosh. ]

There were non-magical people, too - we called them muggles. My parents were muggle dentists.

You know, I was trying to think of a good analogy. Yes, that's exactly it --- it'd be fairly disastrous to transplant a Crest into a child and have everything instantly work... magecraft is dangerous enough in the hands of people who actually have the maturity to realize what they're dealing with.

...Hogwarts, though...? What is that like?

[...probably simultaneously aggressively whimsical and just plain aggressive, given what she's explained about her world thus far.]

It would be more surprising to me if there weren't, honestly.

I see - that does make sense. It would backfire entirely on people if they weren't educated on how to control or use their powers, right?

It's incredible. We have students from ages eleven to eighteen and we are taught how to use our magic and how to control it. We learn other things, too - potions, herbology, the history of magic and all other related things. There aren't really any specialisations until you decide what you want to do for a career.

[ ... Yes. ]

Of course, as long as this is to ourselves. I'm beginning to realize people are kind of... A lot of them say one thing and do the other. [ Basically, no one is as trusting as she is. Thank you, canon. ] I--wait. Muggle?

[ That's.. That's the weirdest phrase she's ever come across. ] What if you learned magic even if you weren't magical in the beginning?

I think that might be a good idea for now. I know some people I can definitely trust, but until I'm sure what we're doing I don't really want it spread around.

[ Hermione just nods. ]

That's right, muggle. And muggles don't really know about the magical world unless one of their children or relatives are magical - it's a bit of a secret.

I know well what you mean. This sounds that it will eventually be an aid to all, and it may be a silly hope, but I hope that something like this may make some here see the folly of wars that take so very many lives.

[Pod, almost without thinking, tries to stand straighter, looking determined.]

I will look in the library. I'm not sure what spells I can learn here, aside from what I already know, but I've learned one. There may yet be more that my own gift will allow. And even if not, there are some that may learn them, if such books exist! I can keep a list as well.

Wait! What if we actually live in the same world, but I don't know about it? have you heard of New Mexico? You have heard of New Mexico, right? And Julliard, or New York City?

[ She can't help her laugh. ]

I've heard of all those places. Like I said - it's a secret. That doesn't mean everyone in the wizarding world knows all about the non-magical, though. One of my friends, he grew up a wizard, had no idea how to use a telephone.

They don't have telephones in the wizarding world?!

How do they communicate?

[ This is serious. She has her cellphone in her pocket even right now, though she needs to recharge it. ]

Yes. It's only fair since you made me a scarf, I make you statues. [ george beams, perhaps his truest smile without a rat being involved to elicit it. martha hushes him as maia tilts her head, looking at him curiously, as he pokes his tongue out toward her to se her become restless once more. ]

[ luke rolls his eyes, ignoring george. but at least she's gained her own confirmation he'd received her gifts, even if he hadn't attached a thank you note to his own he'd dropped by her doorstep before heading off to elf paradise with thalia in tow. but he smiles, almost pleased, ] You're going to have to recharge your iPod soon. It doesn't run on solar power, you know. [ hence his note, meaning a little more than simply informing her it'll need a power up — much like herself, requiring a moment to relax, despite her own protests of doing such a thing — and perhaps needing him to help her around the technology hub he finds himself at home in. his expression turns sheepish, though; ducking his head, he looks from the corner of his eye to the coffee table before them. ] But, uh. Yeah, sorry about all that writing in them. Force of habit. [ as it had been a part of may castellan he had adopted, writing his own notes in books, marring them much like the scar on his face. being able to open one of them and remember how much he had enjoyed a passage to only find it still resonates with him had made him feel attached to someone, even if that luke is now a mere ghost to him. ]

Very much so. In my world, it's honestly a bit dangerous to use magic in the first place if you don't know what you're doing... not just to the people around you, but to you, as well. Even if the spells aren't destructive, you can still do some damage to your own body by using them the wrong way.

...ah, that... well, it sounds like Clock Tower for children, honestly. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about that, but I imagine it can't be too bad.

Well, that's very nice of you. I'll have to make sure to invite you all over when I start making my garden properly. [ Oh, and look how cute he is. She had been wary of snakes since she was thirteen but... George and Martha are different.

When Luke speaks, though, Hermione looks over and she offers him a smile, nodding her head. ] I got the idea. It gives me more reason to pop in and bother you. It's nice to have something to listen to and I suppose it all adds to you trying to get me into your music.

[ She's not entirely oblivious no matter what anyone might think. It's nice to have a reason to come and see Luke, to have an excuse to take five minutes for herself and just relax in his company. Actually having a good reason to sit down and talk to him rather than having casual conversation over the lockets when they each have a spare minute is definitely a bonus too. When he mentions the books, though, all she can do is shake her head. ]

Normally I would find writing in a book suspicious or a little wrong - defacing knowledge, after all - but I like yours. They add to the charm of the gifts, I think.

[ Plus it gives her a little insight into Luke and how he thinks, what he thinks about, and that is always welcome. ]

[ clarisse nods, determindedly, almost as if she's trying to decide whether or not to say "thank you." eventually, after a bit of hesitation, she finally manages: ]

... Yeah. I'd appreciate it.

[ then, of course, it occurs to her that hermione probably has no idea who she is. it's not like clarisse's face is all that recognizable, just her name. and, you know, she really has to wonder if that bounty is still on her head. ]

Name's Clarisse. I'll probably be in the war room, if not on the training grounds.
