Yo.

[It still feels weird to talk at a locket but oh well. She tries to sound as casual as possible.

Like usual, she also doesn't plan to reveal what side she's on in any way either. But asking for advice from both sides seems like it'll get her the best variety of responses.]

I guess a lot of us asked for magic, huh? It seems practical enough in a world like this. Well, anyway, I'm looking for advice from all you magic-users. Since I'm learning now, just tell me what works for you. Tips or something like that. I don't care if you think maybe it won't work for this world's magic. It's worth a shot, right? Aah but I don't need a teacher. I'll learn it myself from these books.

Even if you don't use magic, if you knew people who do, I'll hear about it. [A beat. Oh right.] It's fire magic if that matters. [She laughs softly.] Well... I guess that's fitting for me.

Mm... That's about it.

[Flora is both incredibly excited and potentially very, very alarmed. Bringing magic back or seeing it spread to others is one of her life's missions, but without the proper checks, this could spell disaster. She's perfectly calm as she speaks, though.]

Hello, there. My name is Flora. First off, I want to say congratulations on your power.

[She smiles, very kindly and sincerely, but it is soon tempered by something calm and serious, even as she remains pleasant.]

I have to say that, if you mean to use it seriously, just asking for tips isn't quite going to cut it, I'm afraid. There's always going to be a good deal of trial and error in any discipline but before you learn how to use it and as you continue to do so, you really need the right attitude and to understand what it is that's been given to you. There are constructive and destructive sides to most aspects of magic, but fire especially has qualities that can go beyond what its user is able to manage and cause some serious damage.

If you find a book by a particular author that works for you, look for others written by them as well. It'll (usually) provide consistent guidance. Then, look at the other authors they cite favorably, and look for their works. Try them out, see if any of their stuff is effective, repeat.

Well. I didn't get fire magic, but I asked specifically for something else, so that makes sense.

I think you're all a bunch of fools to go asking for something you don't know anything about.

Well, before any of you go burning down the castles or starting a snowpocolypse you should know the first rule of magic: Magic always has consequences. Next time ask for a puppy.

For advice...uhhh, I don't think I can really help. It sort of came naturally to me, but it helps to see others use it too.

Practice around people you don't like.

[Flora doesn't have to tell her twice that fire can be destructive on a person but that's exactly why she's so stubborn about learning to master it.]

So what you're saying is it isn't something you can just read the books on and ace the test, something like that right?

Heh yeah probably but I want to be useful here. I have a family to protect you know. If I can't do anything against a bunch of monsters, they'll wind up dead.

I've found that to be a more useful approach, yes. Although my methodology may not work for you - I assume you've gotten different responses to your question as well.

Family? Then they all got one of those shard things too?

Way I hear it, eventually it won't be the monsters you need to worry about, but I guess a bit of magic won't hurt against folks either. Dead is dead and all that.

[Mary tries her hardest to bring the books over without falling or making too much noise or both -- helping out is the least that she can do after she was too nervous to request anything. She does, at least, manage until Kido finishes up her broadcast (probably because she stood still while collecting them to listen to that broadcast), but on her way to her side she stumbles, with two on top falling over.]

[No, Mary, you're in a library, aren't you supposed to be quiet? That's what the TV shows say. So she bites back the actual cry until it dies in her throat, then hurriedly goes to pick them up.]

No, unless all you want to ace is theory. Books are a wonderful resource, and you absolutely should read them, but they have their limitations. A book won't tell you how powerful you are, your own limitations, nor will it form better connections to your magic for you. I would honestly recommend getting a teacher, if for no other reason than safety, even if there a number of others where one would be invaluable. What did you ask for explicitly? Just fire magic?

Mary... [She groans and rubs her face.] What do you even trip on?

[But she shifts to grab the books to hopefully stop any further disasters.] Good thing I asked for something.

[Unlike some people. Then again what if Mary got fire magic and set her hair on fire? Maybe this is for the best.]

Aah that is more complicated than it sounded... [She pauses to scratch her head.] But yeah it's just fire magic for now. I want to ask for more magic at the next boon thing but maybe I should ask for something else while I'm working on this.

[Piling on magic suddenly sounds like it could be bad.]

I-I didn't trip this time...! And -- I'll remember... next time.

[But study setup all done, she comes and plops down next to Kido with her own books.]

Um, yes, you might want to exercise a bit of restraint, though I'm curious as to what else you want to ask for.

Well, magic is complicated. It's convenient, wonderful, useful, and fun, but also an incredible responsibility. It's a force of life, not just a tool. It wouldn't be so bad if you were using minor spells for the little everyday things, but if you mean to use it to fight, that's going to take a great deal more, and discipline is something else you won't get from books, either.

yeah ive gotten a few. i guess part of it is needing study tips in general. didnt go to school so i havent done it much.

Yeah, not excited about the fighting people part but... that's why I picked magic too. It's further away. [She's not so sure she could hurt someone up close.] But yeah my family apparently have those shards too. Some of them anyway. I was in charge back home so I need to do something here too.

Yeah, it's for fighting. I mean, I'm not going to be a professional candle-lighter or something. [Though showing off by lighting a candle across the room is on the top of her list.] So I get it from practicing a lot right?

[She grabs a book and flips it open before realising oh right she has to like, study for real. So she opens it to the first page.]

What are you going to ask for anyway?

[Geeze, Kido, don't put her on the spot that way. She sort of blurts it out:]

I want to ask to be stronger...!

[Strong enough to pick up a sword and defend everyone. Strong enough that no one bothers them. Sakura Mary.]

Training, and a lot of it, especially for you. You were given magic by magical people ruling a magical society. Even if everyone here doesn't or can't use it, this place has it everywhere. They were born with and grew up with it. Be aware of that, but don't rush ahead because of it. That's asking for trouble. But, please, find someone to supervise you, especially at the beginning. "Fire magic" isn't actually very telling on its own, and that adds another layer of danger. Self-discovery is very important to magic, at least where I'm from, but you're starting from the ground up. You might have the best of intentions or will do your best to be safe and careful, but you don't know all the ways you need to be because you this is new to you.

[She imagines physically stronger, too. Mary with big muscles. Mary with arms so huge she can use them to walk like some weird fluffy gorilla. Mary grunting!!! Mary the sumo wrestler??!!

Kido pulls her hood up and puts her head down. She's not laughing she's not laughing she's not laughing she's-]

Y-Yeah! That's... that's a good... good wish...!!

Eh really? What sort of types of fire magic are there? Is it that difficult?

Well, it depends on what kind of fire, first of all. It can just be more or less the usual, fire started with light magic, or fire started with dark magic. They may all behave as fire, but they'll exhibit different properties and have different feels to them. But there's also what you can do with it.

-- D-Don't... Don't laugh at me...!

[She doesn't mean to be so loud, but she's so flustered she forgets she's in a library. It's not a joke. It's serious.]

It's not funny, Kido! I... I'm going to protect you and Kano too...!

[Kido waves her hands because soon she won't be able to breathe. She's trying so hard to hide her laughter that her eyes are red but it isn't doing any good when Mary is staring right at her like that.]

Y... Yeah! M-Mary the Muscle of the M-Mekakushi Dan...! [She's sinking down oh no help her.]

[That first bit isn't comforting. Does that mean her fire magic might be 'dark'? It seems like enough trouble to be vague on what side she's on but it'd be worse if her magic just gave her away.]

Hey, do you think the magic the two castles give out is different then? This whole thing is light versus dark right? But aren't they all the same... species sort of?

[Fairies are confusing.]

It's possible, perhaps even likely, but hard to say without a doubt without having a basis for comparison.

[Oh, you sweet sweet summer child.]

Yes, but think of it like...flowers--mundane flowers to make it easier. What ties them all together is that they have chlorophyll, but daffodils aren't nightshades aren't roses. Just because they may both be fairies doesn't mean they're going to have the same powers or be the same way.

[Which, of course, means that Mary is screaming at the top of her lungs in a library while seemingly alone. As usual, she's starting to get a little upset -- her voice is wavering just slightly.]

I-It's not funny...! Don't laugh! K-Kido -- be serious about this -- !

Well, that's understandable then. I'm sorry to say that you'll end up with a lot of trial and error until you find a method that will work for you. I trust that you're patient?

I'm learning how to be invisible. [ It almost seems silly, saying it outloud. ]

[He's using his locket because he's too lazy to come down from the second floor of the library.]

Kido's going to hurt herself.

Right, because killing someone far away is better than getting your hands dirty up close.

Sorry, killing is killing and from the sounds of it that's exactly what our hosts need us to do.

I wouldn't have asked for it if I wasn't good with it. [But yes good, sounds like a person who's knowledgeable about skateboards.]
