3rd Chassé | Video for Both Courts

[After the madness of the dogs, Ryan's mostly taken to spending time holed up in his room in the castle with Kelsi and her specialty-made tea, readjusting to make things more normal again.

Of course then he wakes up to a message from her.

I got asked to go on a quest!!!!!
It's alright, Sif is with me. We're going to deal with a manticore. I don't know what that is but I brought a few books of me along the way.

PS. I took your hat so I won't feel so lonely. Sorry!"

There were several things wrong with the equation:

1.) Kelsi ended up going on a quest.
2.) Kelsi ended up going on a quest without him.
3.) Kelsi ended up going on a quest without him and with his hat.

Then there was also the other question…who the hell is Sif?

Fine. Whatever. He can deal with being apart for a few days. Anyway he had his own business to go about. He needs to get back to his training and the longer he puts off the advice from Queen Solais, the worse off he'll be.

When the video on his locket clicks on anyone watching will notice that Ryan's sitting on a cliff in the sunken ruins. He's busy watching a small group of mermaids swimming below him and the bit of sunlight filtering through the cracks in the walls are bouncing off of his hair now that it's not sheltered by one of his hats. He's humming a song under his breath for a few moments as he continues to watch, only mildly aware he's even humming that particular song to set the mood. Maybe he was more homesick now than he initially thought. Whatever. He can't do anything about that now, he has other goals to reach.

Truth be told, he's kind of wondering if he should ask at all considering everything else that's going on right now. Yeah. He's aware of the things happening at Redgate. He's heard the broadcasts from other people, but…

…but if he doesn't ask now, how the hell is he supposed to really help in the future?]

Weird question. If you were a mermaid, what would be the most flattering thing a person could tell you?

[A beat.]

[Give him a second to think that one over before his hand comes into view of the locket's camera. There's a small sweep of his hand and with what's apparently practiced ease he's forming what looks like a water-shaped snowflake in his hand.

Yeah. He's mastered party tricks and some battle strategies, but not a whole lot else.]

You think so?

...Might not be such a terrible idea. At least it'd be something a bit out there. Non-traditional. Planned. Practiced. More interesting than flowers.

[She grins.]

No, not quite. Gross. [But it's Katsa so he at least looks a little less insulted.] Pretty sure the fish wouldn't be that great at kissing anyway.

[Jack breaks out into a laugh, more excited than mocking as a grin forms and he gives a nod.]

See? You've got yourself a little something there. Not so different. [Raising his own hand, he tosses up a sparkling flake with no trouble at all, having plenty of time to conjure up the magic naturally.]

[He just tilts his head in response. Okay. Overall not a weird request, he thinks.]

I kinda like the idea of being non-traditional. Gives people an edge, you know? I'm not so sure I'm up for having an audience in case that doesn't go over well, but…I guess one person wouldn't hurt.

[There's a flicker at first like he automatically assumes Jack's laughing at him, but it quickly disappears once he clues in. There's another sweep and the water-flake floats up an inch above his palm.]

You don't even wanna know how long it took me to figure this much out. [He grins though as he watches what Jack's doing, taking note of his movements.] So maybe it's not totally different but…probably helps that you're a winter spirit. I mean it's great that I can throw balls of water the size of baseballs and make fancy little things, but it's not exactly the best way to approach a war. Someone told me the best way to master the skills this world gave me was by asking the mermaids to teach me what I'm doing.

--wait, how'd you learn to control yours?

Poor Ryan. If it's kissing you want, you'll have to start looking in places with a few more people around, if they like a bit of obvious flattery. Why are you asking, then?

Ha ha ha, very funny. [And in a show of utmost maturity, he actually winds up sticking out his tongue. Let's not talk about kissing people in Drabwurld shall we?] I'm not looking to kiss mermaids. I'm looking for their help with something. Not-kissing.

I want to get better with the powers the monarchs gave me a few months ago and I think the mermaids and the naiads are the right people to do it. But I think I have to suck up to them first before I can even get that far.

Why can't you just ask outright? It's what you'll do anyway, and if they're that good at what you need.

[WOW THAT IS RUDE. (Though truth be told he's sort of missed having someone like that around, and perhaps that's a bit masochistic. Or maybe he's just been hanging out with jocks for too long.)

I mean I would, but I'm just thinking it might go over better if I take an interest in them instead of approaching them and demanding answers for something. [And because the queen told him to do it this way, and as far as Ryan knows you don't fuck with the queen's orders.]

Besides I need something to kill time until Kelsi gets back. [Shrug. Somehow it's not that weird to mention the fact that he's sort of sulking.]

[ A beat. ] Actually, I'm sure I don't want to know at all.

No. [Though that probably isn't a bad idea at this point.] This is just a one-time thing. Once I get their attention I think I can go from there.

If you wanted to know that in the first place, you should have just asked. [ Even if he technically did. ] Science often implies biology and well, what else was I supposed to assume you're being coy about your affections?

Part of him wants to say "what was I supposed to do, tell everyone I suck at flirting or giving compliments?", but at least he has enough sense not to do that.] Thought I did. [There's a slight shrug though because he knows she's right…even if he did skip a lot of biology in school.] I think the bigger question here is what about me screams fish-sexual that it became your first assumption. And anyway…I dunno. Guess it could have been phrased better.

We're in a world surrounded by fairies, imps, and other magical beings unlike our own.

It'd be odd if some of us didn't fall for our otherworldly companions! The mystic draws in intrigue easily enough on it's own, but having it served before us? It just wouldn't surprise me is all.

I just think asking them to share their skills is taking enough interest in them as it is. Especially if that's all you really want out of them. Otherwise maybe they'd like you better if you're not the one to speak first, hard as it might be, and they take an interest in you instead.

Trust me when I say that that's probably the last thing on my mind right now, but fair enough. If something changes though I'll let you know.

[Though now he has to wonder if anyone else has…and who…and why…focus, Ryan.]

Something like that. Someone wise advised me to try and talk to the mermaids and naiads to help me with something I want to accomplish here. But yeah, so I've heard. [Thanks, Jack.]

What do you know about mermaids?

[ Well she has feelings for the "spirit" of King Arthur, who by the way is a chick and is going through a goth phase. So there's that. ]

Only about what I've read in tales before coming here which means there remains a chance what I do know is dated.

--but mermaids are very deadly as well as possessive. You'll want to be charming, but not too charming. After all, if she happens to like you enough, she'll try to bring you into the water with her.

... by the way, it should go without saying, but don't get in the water around them.
