When my mother told me tales of magical creatures and monsters under the bed when I was a child I always thought they were just stories to teach me a lesson - you know, 'don't sleep under the bed with the dog, Marian, the monsters will get you'! I didn't think they were real, I thought she meant fleas.

[ She's lifting her shoulder, now, almost a shrug, even as she's grinning. Humour is her forte, her defence, and waking up in a place where she has to fight another war for people she barely knows, other than as a whole, as stereotypes. It's not that she minds fighting, of course, as that's what she does for a living, but she likes having a definite reason to fight. Someone was murdered, a child was kidnapped, mages were being tortured, elves enslaved - that sort of thing. She needs a little more than 'she's special'.

Because, in her mind, she isn't. ]

But here we are and here they are. We're here to help, right? ... Unless this has something to do with the looters in the Wounded Coast or that Qunari patrol, in which case... I didn't do it? Really, I promise it was an accident. Honest.

[ The little smile on her face is proof enough that it obviously wasn't an accident - but she continues, crossing her arms over her chest. Jokes and humour are all well and good, of course, but she does have a point. ]

If you've seen a dwarf without a beard, tell me. Or a scary glowing elf. Actually, if you see scary glowing anything you should definitely let me know. I'll take care of them.

An elf? Surprisingly we've seen a lot of those. At least a dwarf as well, but he has a beard. [His mouth twists a little.] What kind of dwarf doesn't have a beard?

He lost it. [ She shrugs, grinning. ] If you listen to his tales he would have you believed it crawled off his face and fled the moment he gave up thoughts of his homeland.

Lived on the surface drinking his weight in ale instead of dwelling underground and making armour and so-on? [ She smirks, looking rather pleased with herself. ] He's a good friend, though, despite the beard problems.

Anything... trolls maybe. At least they're stupid and turn into stone in the sunlight. [ So, not a problem! Unlike this predicament. ]

[After a couple days in this place, the rueful amusement is finally able to take a place in her tone over just plain panic]

'Scary' seems a relative term at the moment, my lady.

Scary is rarely rational, don't you think? [ She hums, though, curious. ] Not as pretty as my elf, promise.

I get into trouble even if I don't ask for it. I thought I'd try and beat trouble to it this time.

[ And then she leans into the locket, frowning. ]

Caer Scima. [ He tilts the locket, revealing not much more than shadows and a dark wall, and then turns it back to his own strained smile. ] Add some human waste and I feel right at home.

[ Oh, children. She's never been good with children, not ever. ]

Qunari. Like 'coo-nah-ree'. They're a race with morality based around their religion. Very interesting and very scary.

[ Don't be alarmed by the alien, Hawke. Or do. It seems to be the trend around these parts. ]

Ok, so this might be a stupid question...

[ So expect a stupid answer, Vakarian. He could almost hear Shepard joking with him in his head. ]

But, would you mind explaining for those of us who've never heard of them... what "elves" and "dwarves" are? "Qunari" too, if you're feeling generous.

Elves are people that look like us, with more angular faces and pointy ears. Dwarves are small, short, with beards for the most part. Then Qunari are a soldier race with horns who follow the religion of the Qun.

[ He tilts his head for a moment, looking somewhat confused. ]

Ok, I can see the difference in between the Qunari and humans, but... elves and dwarves? Wouldn't it just be easy to call them something like "pointy-eared humans" and "short, often bearded humans?

[ or maybe he's looking at this wrong. ]

Are they all from other planets?
