What became of Reynard? How and why did this happen?

[His tone is cold and harsh. He rather liked Alyosha. She had the potential to be a good ally. To think that ambitious fool Reynard had offed her certainly angers him. It's high past time he did something about that nuisance.]

I'm trying to ascertain.

She made a challenge; he accepted; he won. Stuck her through the belly. They were, I gather, old enemies.

I genuinely cannot fathom how or why.
