My lord. My true upbringing stems from the support of the fey. In this, I'm indebted to them to protect their lands and their well-being.

In this, I will be working to restore one of their Glens, so it may flourish in the wake of battles that had sundered it. Despite this, I will always be available for your sake. Please, do not hesitate to call upon my aid if necessary. My response will be ever swift.

[Lancelot blinked when he heard Vanyel make that comment. He heard his King say the same thing. Arthur, whose kindness was simply 'a matter of course' never often enjoyed acknowledging his decisions actually were from the standpoint of concern and worry.]

It's been awhile since I've heard that... But, I am pleased to meet you, Sir Vanyel. May I make a request of you? To inform me if you bear witness to sins against the forests?

Likewise, Sir Lancelot. [It really is nice hearing someone genuinely caring about nature. So many times, people plow forward without any thought to the havoc they wreak.] You have my word. If I don't put a stop to it myself, I will inform you promptly.

I do not take kindly to anyone's home being ruined.

[For the moment, Lancelot was in awe regarding the support he had suddenly accumulated. Perhaps it was simply because of the benevolence of others, but he felt he had been doing something selfless once more and it went to his head.]

I am a member of the Seelie Court, however I am unsure what that exactly entails. [He will always be himself regardless of the titles attached to his name.] Enemies are not what I seek; peace is preferable.

Peace... [He sounded a bit amused. The expression he wore remained bleak.]

'Seelie' is merely a faction. Men and women battling for supremacy. The rest of the world will suffer, but I would look to limit it.

In that regard, I cannot hope for peace nor can I work towards it, Sir Vanyel. I am a tool of destruction as raised by my mother.

Then I will look to limit it too. [There is only one he wishes to protect; has promised to protect. Fortunately that person isn't a soldier or even a fighter.]

I do not see someone who destroys when I look at you, Sir Lancelot. What ever your mother has taught you, it is up to you to decide what you do with those skills.

It's a decision I made a long while ago. [Technically, it was never his choice to begin with.]

I was bred for battle and because of my strength and experience, it would be best if I were left only to such things. This is simply... how I lend my aid to others.

I'm sorry you came to such a decision. [Everyone deserves peace in his mind. To completely ignore it - or avoid it - for a lifetime seems overwhelming.]

I pray we do not meet in battle. [He closes his eyes and inhales deeply.] As a Herald, I have sworn to follow the orders of my King and Queen. Additionally, I have been trained to shield and protect those who cannot defend themselves.

I will enter battle for the sake of saving lives.

You have an admirable goal in mind, sir. Though I am not renowned for showing mercy, let it be known that in my battles, I do not strike down those who surrender or flee. I will only attack those who accept my challenges or attack my allies directly.

[He couldn't help but feel the need to tell him this--if only because he hoped it would be a comfort.]

In war, this means little, however I feel it important you allow you knowledge of my conditions of battle.

I cannot fault you for the way in which you approach battle, then. [It is a relief, yet it doesn't alleviate the sadness of Lancelot's plight.] What would become of you if all fighting ceased?

Would you find a new way to live?

I suppose I've never considered it. I would hope that I don't live to see such a time. The sins I've accumulated demand that I, as a beast, be slain by a hero of great valor in battle.

[He was certain that if he lived that long then he would have definitely failed.]

Valor, in my age, was always reliant on there being war. Knights were made to exist for such reasons. I have no skill in anything else other than that. I suppose it would be better, then, to simply wait.

[Way to go, Lancelot. You actually managed to trump your own bleak outlook.]

Your way of thinking is the opposite of most I have encountered. Why do you see yourself as a beast?

[Vanyel has a large heart and hearing someone talk about themselves in that manner bothers him.]

There is valor in small deeds and knights can guard, defend and protect outside of battle too. It tires me to think violence is inevitable - particularly if precautions are taken.

[And to meet someone who defines themselves based on battle...

It's sad.]

[There was a weak smile as Lancelot touched upon the breastplate of his armor with clawed, cruel looking gauntlet fingers.]

In a moment of misunderstanding and weakness, I betrayed my kingdom, which lead to its ruin.

[He added, as if to further degrade himself--]

As such, my fall was greater because I was the perfect knight. As a machine called 'knight', one must simply exist for the sake of their kingdom. Selfishness must never become a factor, as strength and dexterity can make one a terror not only in the battlefield, but whimsical thoughts of individuality can create tyrants and despots who use their influence for personal gain.

[His tone was grave, but despite its unforgiving quality, there was no hatred when he spoke of himself. Lancelot's anger was elsewhere.]

I was one such beast whose greed became such a sin.
