It's not so unusual where I come from, though it seems out of the ordinary here.

It is strange to me, but I grow accustomed to it with time - at the least it is not difficult to learn. Was it so common then, in your world?

Not common, exactly, but not rare either. Mostly people use things like this to keep in touch with people they already know, but the same tools can and are be used to meet others.
